This 8-hour course provides a review and assessment of DRM radar transfer plotting methods as necessary to demonstrate the ability to use radar to determine the range and bearing to multiple contacts; and demonstrate an understanding of relative motion, assessment of risk of collision, and action to avoid collision.
Each applicant who successfully completes this course will satisfy the training requirements of 46 CFR 11.480(d) for maintaining the validity of an endorsement as Radar Observer.
Each student who successfully completes this course will have demonstrated the awareness of the need to maintain a continuing plot of vessel targets which may pose a potential threat of collision; be able to derive from the lot/display the necessary information about the other vessels' courses, speeds, and closest points of approach to allow for appropriate action to be taken in ample time, in accordance with the Navigation Rules (COLREGS 1972) to prevent close-quarters situation from developing.
