    The modules of this 80-hour course are:

    • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD)
    • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
    • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid (CPR & FA)
    • Basic Firefighting (BFF)
    • Steward Training
    • (Modules are available individually.)

    The purpose of this course is to provide training for mariners in personal survival techniques, emergency evolutions, and evacuation procedures.  To provide the basic knowledge and general shipboard galley familiarization required for personnel who will be assigned duties and responsibilities as a Steward assistant.  Furthermore, to provide the knowledge required for seafarers with designated security duties in accordance with the requirements =of Chapter XI - 2 of SOLAS 74.

    A trainee will be:

    • Able to identify and avoid unsafe practices onboard a vessel.
    • Able to recognize hazards and apply countermeasures associated with various shipboard emergencies i.e. fire, flooding, floundering, etc.
    • Able to give and interpret emergency signals.
    • Able to describe the potential problems associated with abandoning ship and crew duties to passengers.
    • Be competent in personal survival techniques, fire prevention/fighting, and elementary first aid.

    The successful student will be eligible for a US Coast Guard STCW Certificate stating that they have completed Basic Safety Training as mandated by the 1995 STCW Convention.

    The training provided by this course satisfies the requirements of STCW, Competences Tables A-VI/1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4.
