Completion of this program leaves the student better prepared as an entry-level merchant mariner than nearly all others he or she will be competing with in the job market. Most entry-level applicants have no training or only Basic Training to add to their resumes and job applications. Graduates of our O.S. Program have much more training and therefore have obtained the ability to stand out from the rest.

Our school provides both day and evening Ordinary Seaman Program class schedules to accommodate our student's personal lives. The schedules are as follows:

Day Course: 3 weeks, Mon - Fri, 8 am to 5pm for 3 weeks
Night Course: 6 weeks, Mon - Fri, 6 pm to 10pm for approximately 6 weeks

The program consists of 7 courses overall. All Coast Guard approved courses will greatly assist in obtaining an entry level Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and additional STCW endorsements. The U.S. Coast Guard and STCW courses that students will receive instruction on in this 3 week program are VPDSD, PST, PSSR, BFF, FACPR, RFPNW.

Components of the program include 3 STCW courses, which are United States Coast Guard approved and overseen, and lead to merchant mariner credential endorsements:

    1. Basic Training (STCW) consists of four different components:

    • Basic Firefighting: 16 Hours
    • First Aid and CPR: 8 Hours
    • Personal Survival Techniques: 12 Hours
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities: 4 Hours

    2. Vessel Personnel Designated Security Duties (VPDSD): 8 Hours

    3. Rated Forming Part of the Navigational Watch (RFPNW): 40 Hours

We also include Marlinespike Seamanship, which is imperative for the safety and competency of any seafarer. This course teaches our student's knot tying, line handling, and splicing. The program also includes ship terminology, ship construction, lines, and anchoring.
